The Raven
Society Name
Our name
comes from one of the greatest Americans to ever live--and he spent his formative
years in Blount County. The Raven was his Cherokee name; he was adopted by the
chief of the Hiwassee Island Cherokee and was a legal member of the Cherokee
Nation. But as Congressman from Tennessee, Governor of Tennessee, Commander
in Chief of the Army of Texas, President of Texas, Governor of Texas, Senator
from Texas and Governor of Texas again, he was known as Sam Houston.
Almost
200 years ago, Houston recognized we Americans needed to exercise restraint
in what were doing to the Native Americans and the land itself. He preferred
the outdoor, rural life. In his political life, Houston made a name for himself
taking on inept and corrupt politicians.
